A construction crew found human remains Wednesday afternoon, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office said.
They made the grim discovery while excavating the wooded near the intersection of U.S. 1 and Kitterman Road around 2:30 p.m.
“They uncovered what is believed to be human remains,” St. Lucie County Chief Deputy Garry Wilson said.
“I drive past this road every single day, so Lord knows how many times I drove past it,” neighbor Tony Rodenberry said.
Criminal investigators and the crime scene investigation team used specialized equipment to uncover evidence.
Right now, authorities don’t know the gender of the potential human remains. Wilson said the remains could have been here for over a year.
The area where the remains were uncovered is wooded and muddy. Wilson says those environmental factors, plus the time lapse isn’t ideal for collecting evidence.
“So, it’s going to take them a while, but they are going to go very meticulously through it all to recover everything that we possibly can,” he said.
