Deputies said a man from South Florida who thought he stole a couple of opioid pills ended up stealing laxatives.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office arrested 56-year-old Peter Hans Emery Jr. on a felony charge of petit theft.

Investigators said he's caught on camera opening the victim's lock box, taking a pill bottle, and dumping several pills into his hand before walking away.

Authorities said the pill bottle had a label on it which read, "Hydrocodone Acetaminophen." The bottle actually contained Equate Gentle Laxatives.

The sheriff's office said Emery threw away the pills when he learned they were not Hydrocodone. Emery pulled the pills out of the trash to show deputies the evidence.

Emery has two prior theft convictions on his record, the sheriff's office said.
