A man from Lake Worth says he is in love with a 12-year-old girl he's accused of getting pregnant.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrested 23-year-old Edgar Ramos-Mendez on three counts of lewd and lascivious battery and one count of impregnating a minor.

The investigation began when the girl spoke with Child Protection Team investigators in January. She was eight months pregnant and due to give birth in early March.

According to the arrest report, the girl said she met Ramos-Mendez in a park when she was 11 years old. They exchanged phone numbers and ultimately went out on dates. Ramos-Mendez, according to the girl, asked her parents to go out with her and they allowed it, as long as they didn't become intimate and remain friends.

The girl told investigators she and Ramos-Mendez had sex at his cousin's house. She was twelve years old. The girl said they had sex several times but regretted it because it was her first time.

Investigators said Ramos admitted to having sex with the girl. He called it consensual and that she initiated the sex. According to the arrest report, Ramos-Mendez said he didn't think she'd become pregnant because they only had sex a few times.

Ramos-Mendez, according to the report, said he wanted to have a family and raise his daughter with the girl.

Ramos-Mendez appeared in court Monday morning. He's being held on bonds totaling $400,000. He's due back in court in March. He's not allowed to have any contact with the girl or anyone under the age of 18.
