A 26-year-old man from Stuart has died after crashing his car into a community pond, the Martin County Sherrif's Office said.
A deputy saw the vehicle drive past him at a high rate of speed, leading the deputy to pursue.
The driver didn't stop, eventually turning to the Coral Gardens residential community. The vehicle drove through a cul-de-sac and into a pond, deputies said.
The driver died in the vehicle. The passenger in the car was able to free himself and escape. The passenger told deputies they were driving home after getting pizza.
The passenger said he was concerned with the rate of speed they were traveling at and urged his friend to slow down.
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office along with the State Attorney’s Office is investigating.
