A Port St. Lucie Police officer is now on unpaid leave after his arrest on a warrant from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Sergeant Timothy Petronico, 49, is facing a charge of possession of firearms prohibited by a person with a final domestic violence injunction.

Police said Petronico had an active restraining order against him. Last December, the department placed Petronico on paid leave to investigate a claim that he had a gun in his possession while off-duty.

State law allows a police officer, in spite of an injunction, to possess a firearm and ammunition while performing official duties on behalf of their employing agency.

Petrocino has been with Port St. Lucie Police since June 2004. He received a promotion to sergeant in 2015.

The FDLE is handling the investigation.
