A recovery mission is underway to find a missing diver at Phil Foster Park in Riviera Beach.
Riviera Beach Fire Rescue says a man in his fifties disappeared while diving with his niece Friday morning. It’s still not clear how it happened or if currents played a role.
Loren Chron says he was diving with his family in the area when the man went missing.
“They came up to us and told us there was a missing diver to keep an eye out,” he said. “My heart goes out to the family certainly, we wanted to help but we were told to stay out of the water. We offered our bc and regulators to any of the emergency responders.”
The response and search included divers from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and West Palm Beach Fire Rescue.
The U.S. Coast Guard also joined in while the missing man’s loved ones watched in disbelief.
Just before noon, after two hours of searching the waters, the search transitioned from a rescue to recovery.
“It’s tragic, you never want to see someone doing a recreationally activity hurt themselves,” Chorn said.
The sheriff’s office is now involved in the recovery of the missing diver.
