A scam targeting registered sex offenders and predators has been circulating in Okeechobee.

The Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office says they've received several calls from registered sex offenders and predators that have been threatened with incarceration. They say the caller claims that the offender isn't in compliance with registering and is going to be arrested.

In one case, the caller told the offender to go to Walmart and buy some money cards, according to the sheriff's office. In another case, the offender was told to meet the caller at the sheriff's office.

The caller is claiming to be Detective Stephenson from the sheriff's office with the phone number 863-313-0540.

Those in doubt about where to to register are asked to call their local law enforcement agency.
