How to protect your packages from 'porch pirates'

Now that Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone, packages will start to arrive on doorsteps across the nation in larger numbers in the next few days.

With that in mind, the team at Ring wants to remind everyone that Wednesday is National Package Protection Day and that nearly one in five U.S. homeowners have been a victim of package theft in the last year, according to their study.

Here are some of their tips on how to protect your packages from 'porch pirates':

  1. Join a Neighborhood Watch: an app like Neighbors, "provides real-time, local crime and safety information, communities are able to keep in touch and alert their neighbors of any porch pirates in the area," according to a Ring spokesperson.
  2. Use Smart Home Technology: Ring says its Video Doorbell, "sends instant alerts to your mobile device when anyone rings the bell or approaches your front door," and can let you catch a thief in the act. You can even see when your package is being delivered and let the courier know where to hide your packages. The Video Doorbell is one of many smart home products available to protect yourself from package thieves.
  3. Consider an Amazon Locker: if you plan on being away, or don't have a safe place where your package can be delivered, you can choose to have it delivered to an Amazon Locker. Find locker locations here.
