Two entrepreneurs in Mexico started a leather business where all of their material is made from cactus leaves.

Desserto was founded by Adrian Lopez Velarde and Marte Cazarez. They are said to be the first to create leather out of cactus'.

"Desserto is a highly sustainable plant-based vegan-leather made from cactus, often distinguished by its great softness at touch while offering a great performance for a wide variety of applications and complying with the most rigorous quality and environmental standards," the company says on their website. "The aim is to offer cruelty-free, sustainable alternative, without any toxic chemicals, phthalates, and PVC. The result, Desserto, the Cactus Vegan-Leather, is partially biodegradable and has the technical specifications required by the fashion, leather goods, furniture and even automotive industries." they continue.

The duo said they wanted to create an alternative to animal skin leather.

After two years of research and work, they finally created cactus leather in July 2019.

Adrian and Marte's inspiration came from working in the furniture, automotive and fashion industries where they identified that the problem of environmental pollution was serious, according to the website. They wanted to find a way to help reduce pollution and make a positive difference in the environment.

The product is all organic. The company has no irrigation system and grows its product strictly through rainwater.

The company makes handbags, footwear, and clothing with the material.
