First Round of Boca Raton Championship

The fan favorites and brightest stars in the PGA Tour Champions rose to the top during Round One of the Boca Raton Championship. Names like Bernard Langer, John Daly, Fred Funk and Rocco Mediate all within pouncing range of the lead. But the leader got his start in Palm Beach County

What a way to start this tournament early Friday morning. Army Sergeant Dana Bowman skydived down to the first tee with a gigantic American flag. Bowman lost his legs in a military training accident back in 1994. He stuck the perfect landing, capped it off with the ceremonial first tee off, and spread inspiration and military appreciation.

There couldn't be a guy who appreciates being in the lead more then Mark Calcavecchia. It's been a while. But he's leading by one at eight under, ripping off 8 birdies. CBS12 covered Calc closely since this 70's - he was a CBS12 Athlete of the Week in 1977. Calc won a state championship at North Shore High School in West Palm Beach - a school that closed in 1987.

But there are so many big names in the hunt - John Daly three back, Bernard Langer two back and Rocco Mediate one back.
