Phil Mickelson plays historic practice round with Tiger, appreciates his comeback

Just when you thought a brand new Masters moment wouldn’t be created until this Thursday when the tournament officially tees off, two all-time fan favorites at Augusta National got together to create one on Tuesday.

Those who headed straight to the 10th tee when the gates opened witnessed the beginning of a Masters moment they’ll never forget.

“I walked by Tiger on the range and said, 'I’d never thought I’d see the day,'” said Palm Beach Gardens resident Rory McIlroy with a smile. “Tiger (Woods) and Phil (Mickelson) playing a practice round together"

That’s just one take on why witnessing Tuesday’s practice round with Woods and Mickelson seemed so surreal. The biggest rivals in golf at one time, they have seven Masters Titles between them, playing in a foursome with fellow Masters champ Fred Couples and newcomer Thomas Peiters.

“Nobody respects and appreciates more when he’s done for the game, because no one has (benefited more) than me,” Mickelson said. “I’ve always had an appreciation and respect for him, and to see him out there playing again is incredible.”

Woods will officially begin his quest for a fifth green jacket at 10:42 a.m. Thursday morning when he tees off for real with Marc Leishman and Tommy Fleetwood.
