Two men killed in crash in Palm Springs

A serious crash closed a section of Lake Worth Road Tuesday morning.

A serious early morning crash killed two men and closed the intersection of Lake Worth Road and Kirk Road Tuesday.

At least two vehicles were involved in the crash. The vehicles were heavily damaged in the collision, which took place just before 4 a.m.

The intersection reopened just after 9 a.m.

Jonathan Gonzalez, 22, was driving west on Lake Worth Road in his 2010 Jeep Wrangler, crossing the intersection at Kirk Road at a steady green light, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. At the same time, a 29-year-old man was speeding south on Kirk Road toward the same intersection in a 2014 Nissan Sentra. The driver blew the red light and crashed into the Jeep Wrangler.

The Nissan went south through the intersection, overturned and came to a final rest facing west, the FHP said. The Jeep Wrangler continued west on Lake Worth Road and stopped in the inside lane, facing west.

The driver of the Nissan and one of his passengers, 30-year-old Shane Longwell, died at the scene.

The crash is believed to be alcohol related, but is still under investigation.
