Palm Beach County School District proposes fall sports plan

The return to high school sports has been a complex and controversial subject through the pandemic but the Palm Beach County School Board may be one step closer in reaching a decision.

The Palm Beach County School Board met this afternoon to discuss the reenactment of fall sports with a recommendation for football to opt-out of the Florida High School Athletic Association's State Series and to create a Tri-County partnership this year with Broward and Dade.

As far as fans go, it's being proposed that all players be allowed two pre-approved guests per game with strict health protocols on site.

Football:

  • Sept. 21 - Oct. 3 - Conditioning
  • Oct. 5 - Weightroom opens
  • Oct. 12 - 16 - Non-contact period begins.
  • Oct. 17-24 - Contact period.
  • Oct. 30 - Dec.19 - Regular season
  • Teams will play 6 regular-season games against Palm Beach County schools with one bye week and a "bowl game" against a team from Broward or Miami-Dade County.
  • All games will be played at either Wellington High School, Jupiter High School, and Boca Raton High School as those fields have turf.
  • One game played Friday at 6 p.m.
  • Three games played Saturday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m.
  • Teams will be required to arrive at games already in uniform, locker rooms won't be open.
  • No paper tickets. Tickets will need to be purchased online at GOFAN.CO.
  • Tickets will be scanned when pulling into the parking lot.
  • Designated home team Marching bands will be allowed to perform.
  • JV Football will begin Nov. 30 with conditioning.
  • Jan 4. - Jan 9. - Non-contact period.
  • Jan 18. - Jan 22. - Contact period.
  • Jan. 23 - Feb 6. - Regular season. JV teams will play three games.

Bowling:

  • Sept. 8 - Sept. 20 - Paperwork.
  • Sept 29. - Oct. 10 - Practice.
  • Oct 13. - Nov 14 - Regular season.
  • Week of Nov. 16 - Post-season championship

Girls Volleyball:

  • Sept. 8 - Sept. 20 - Paperwork
  • Sept. 21 - Oct 3. - Outdoor conditioning.
  • Oct. 5 - Oct 10. - Open gym.
  • Oct 13. - Oct 24. - Tryouts and practice.
  • Oct. 26. - Nov. 20 & Nov. 30 - Dec 4. - Regular season.
  • Varsity will play twice a week and ten total matches on the season.
  • Freshmen and JV teams will play once a week and have five regular-season matches.
  • Rosters will be maxed at 15 players per level.

Golf:

  • Sept. 8 - Sept. 20 - Paperwork
  • Sept 21. - Oct. 3 - On course practice.
  • Oct 5 to Nov. 7 - Regular season.
  • Nov 9. - Nov. 14 - Post-season championship.
  • Teams will play five regular-season matches.

Swimming/Diving:

  • Sept. 8 - Sept. 20 - Paperwork
  • Sept. 21 to Sept 26 - Dry land conditioning only.
  • Sept. 29 to Oct. 10 - Practice at the pool.
  • Oct. 13- Nov. 14 - Regular season.
  • Nov. 16 - Nov. 21 - Post-season championship.
  • Teams will have five regular-season matches

Cheer and Dance

  • Sept. 8 - Sept. 20 - Paperwork
  • Sept. 21 to Sept. 26 - Outdoor conditioning.
  • Sept. 29 - Oct 10. - Tryouts.
  • No mats, stunting, building, or tumbling will be allowed.

The School District said it's expecting to lose $650,000 due to the decrease of gate revenue and with no concessions being sold at events. The plan has not yet been approved. The next school board meeting is scheduled for September 16.
