Meteorologist Zach Covey is a meteorologist with a tropical and severe weather focus. He joined the StormTrac Weather Team in October 2019.
Hi all, it's Zach! As a military brat who followed his family around the globe, I eventually landed in West Palm Beach, Florida my senior year of high school.
From there, I took my talents to The Florida State University and studied meteorology. I was able to study under some of the top tropical weather minds in the nation. It was there where I found my passion for tropical and severe weather, taking every opportunity to learn as much as I could. To this day, one of my favorite things to talk about is tricodial oscillations, or when a hurricane wobbles on its track.
I graduated from FSU in the spring of 2016 with a bachelor's degree in meteorology. After that, I packed up and left Tallahassee and headed to the wild west to become the weekend meteorologist and weekday multimedia journalist in El Paso, Texas. I was able to get first hand experience covering severe weather from the monsoon season that hits the Southwest every Summer. In the Summer of 2017, I provided coverage of the approach and landfall of Hurricane Harvey, a storm which dumped a historic 40+" of rainfall in Houston and Beaumont and cost billions of dollars in damage to Texas.
From there, I moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to become the morning meteorologist on Good Morning Carolinas.
I'm so excited to be back in Florida, especially a city I spent some time growing up in. I'm ready to provide expertise when the forecast turns dire and hope my weather reports embody what you as a viewer look for from a knowledgeable and passionate weather team at CBS 12 News.
