On Oct. 18, 2022, a Haywood County man, Caleb Henry, part of a larger hunting party, killed what is now the largest bear harvested on record in the western region of North Carolina, as recorded by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. The male black bear weighed in at 695 pounds, smashing the prior record of a 688-pound bear killed in the early 1990s in Madison County.
